Ajax - Guelph

We eagerly returned to the trail after our brief respite in Ottawa. We had enjoyed three days of whirlwind visits and family time. Filled with their love, we embarked on the train that carried us back toward the shores of Lake Ontario.
We realised that part of our spirit was waiting on the path. We rejoined these vaporous aspects of ourselves, these ghosts, these thru-hiker personas that were our true selves. We imagined meeting Simon’s ‘Energiser’ and Julie’s ‘Pockets’ sitting in the shade of a tree. Their smiles lighting up as they saw us approaching. In silence we formed a line that merged until there were only the two of us again, feeling complete and at home. Distance walking completed us. Through it we were freed of our former city dweller identities and experienced our true nature.

But back to the trail… We entered Canada’s most densely populated zone, the Greater Toronto Area. The Great Trail meandered through communities along the western shores of Lake Ontario. For well over one hundred kilometers, the path followed roadways and city parks. We planned to skip portions of this section. Walking in cities, especially busy ones, presented some challenges that we would rather avoid.
The crowds in downtown Toronto were madly rushing around. We stopped to get some directions and were immediately bustled into a current of pedestrians on the streets of this large metropolis.  Simon caught his bearings and lead us toward the water’s edge where we joined the Waterfront Trail. The vistas were pretty with green spaces, docks, and boats. People brushed past us in a hurry, barely looking up from their trajectory. Walking in these metropolitan areas felt very isolating. We were surrounded by people and felt invisible.
Julie needed to pee, so we stopped at a café for a drink. Sitting by the sidewalk, we watched people passing by. Another patron of the café started a conversation. Raj was a businessman. His speech was fast, his fingers worked his phone as he asked questions about our adventure. He wished us well as he jumped into his fancy car with a coffee in one hand and his phone to his ear. Simon remembered that style of life. Did he miss it? Not one bit!
After a few hours, we had had enough of city walking. We made our way by train through Mississauga, Burlington and Hamilton, and into Brantford. This town was established in 1877, and once was considered for the capital of Canada. It was situated by the Grand River. It was a pleasant looking town but had a reputation of high crime (per capita). Simon found a hotel for the night as Julie was still experiencing a sore back. A hot bath, a Simon massage and coffee in bed was the prescription!

The Great Trail followed the Grand River to Cambridge about fifty kilometers away. We loved Cambridge. We veered off trail to explore the historical downtown streets. In the late 1700’s developers began to buy land along the river and built mills, cathedrals and stately homes. The railway reached this area in 1879, increasing business opportunities. The communities of Galt, Preston, and Blair were amalgamated in 1973 forming Cambridge.
Walking in these historical towns was a highlight. We appreciated their heritage and urban charm. Truly a vibrant walking environment. The old buildings had been given a new life as cafés, museums, and business offices. We imagined how it would be to live there. But rejoining the Great Trail was a must, as it was our guide across Canada.

Cambridge and the Grand River

The Great Trail in this part of the province used busy roads, residential suburbs, and a few green spaces. The trail markers were confusing and became non-existent in these urban areas.  Thanks to the TCT App, we found our way though these mazes.
We took a break by the river on a short nature trail in Homer Watson Park. The Grand River flowed lazily. We spotted kingfishers, blue herons, and even a great egret. We soaked up the silence of this green space for we still had ten kilometers of road walking to do that day. We reached Kitchener, road weary but satisfied with our travels.
This last segment of the Great Trail was representative of the busy southern Ontario landscape. It was demanding with its urban sensory overload. From Kitchener, we planned to walk to the train station and travel to Guelph. The Great Trail was more rural from Guelph to Barrie. We looked forward to being back on the old railbed trails, farmlands, and silence.

Nous rejoignîmes avec impatience le Grand Sentier après notre bref répit à Ottawa. Nous avons apprécié trois jours de visites familiales. Remplis de leur amour, nous embarquâmes dans le train qui nous ramenaient vers la rive nord du lac Ontario.
Nous avons réalisé qu'une partie de notre conscience nous attendait sur le sentier. Nous rejoignîmes ces aspects éphémères de nous-mêmes, ces fantômes, ces identités formés par le sentier qui nous étaient réel. Nous imaginions retrouvé ‘energiser’ (Simon) et ‘pocket’ (Julie) assis à l'ombre d'un arbre. Leurs sourires s'illuminaient en nous voyant approcher. En silence, nous nous étions éventuellement fusionnés, se sentant complet, nomades en nature. La marche à distance nous complétait. Grâce à elle, nous avions facétieusement abandonner nos anciennes identités de citadins et revêtues nos vrais personnages.
Mais revenons-en à la piste... Nous entrions maintenant dans la zone la plus densément peuplée du Canada, la région Métropolitaine de Toronto. Le Grand Sentier traversait les communautés le long de la rive ouest du lac Ontario sur plus d'une centaine de kilomètres. Le Grand Sentier suivait sentiers et routes. La marche dans ces sections urbaines, en particulier les plus achalandées, représentait pour nous un grand défi.

La foule du centre-ville de Toronto se précipitait follement. Nous nous étions arrêtés pour se repérés et nous nous étions immédiatement faits entrainés dans un torrent de piétons qui circulait avec intensités dans les rues de cette grande métropole. Simon avait vite pris ses repères et de plomb, nous nous dirigeâmes vers la rive où nous rejoignîmes le Grand Sentier. Les abords étaient jolis avec des espaces verts, des quais et des bateaux. Les gens passaient à la hâte, sans reconnaissance, levant à peine les yeux. En marchant dans ces régions métropolitaines nous nous sentions isolés. Entourés de gens on se sentait invisible.
Nous nous étions arrêtés dans un café pour boire une limonade (et faire un petit pipi). Assis sur la terrasse, nous regardions les gens passer. Un client c’était arrêté et entama une conversation. Raj était un homme d'affaires. Ses paroles rapides, ses doigts constamment poinçonnant son téléphone, il posât plusieurs questions au sujet de notre aventure. Il nous souhaita bonne route alors qu’il était sauté dans sa voiture de luxe, son café dans une main et son téléphone à l'oreille. Simon se souvenait de ce style de vie. Le manquait-il ? Pas du tout !
Après seulement quelques heures, nous en avions assez... Nous traversâmes Mississauga, Burlington et Hamilton en train pour finalement se retrouver à Brantford. Une ville fondée en 1877, avant la confédération, elle avait été considérée pour être la capitale du Canada. Elle était située près de la Grande Rivière. Cette ville agréable, avait une mauvaise réputation avec un taux de criminalité très élevé (par habitant). Simon avait trouvé un hôtel pour la nuit. Quoi que moindre, Julie avait toujours son mal de dos. Un bain chaud, un massage ‘à la Simon’ et un café au lit était prescript !
Le Grand Sentier suivait la Grande Rivière jusqu'à Cambridge, une distance de cinquante kilomètres. Nous avons adoré Cambridge. Nous quittions le sentier pour marcher le long de ses rues historiques au centre-ville. À la fin du 18e siècle, les premiers habitants commencèrent à acheter des terres le long de la rivière et construisirent des moulins, des cathédrales et des maisons seigneuriales. Le chemin de fer atteignit cette vallée en 1879, augmentant le commerce dans la région. Les communautés de Galt, Preston et Blair furent fusionnées en 1973, formant Cambridge.

Marcher dans ces villes historiques était captivant. Nous avons apprécié le patrimoine et le charme de ces centres urbain (Brantford, Cambridge, Kitchener, etc.). Les sections hors-pistes, nous offraient plus de substance et une marche plus dynamique. Les vieux bâtiments, maintenant rénovés, avait une nouvelle vie en tant que : cafés, musées et bureaux d'affaires. Pendant des moments de rêves, nous nous imaginions y vivre. Mais rejoindre le Grand Sentier était nécessaire, il était notre guide pour la traversée du Canada.
Le sentier utilisait routes achalandées, banlieues résidentielles, et quelques pistes dans des parcs et autres espaces verts. Le balisage était moins qu’idéal et était même devenu inexistant dans certaines zones urbaines. Grâce au logicielle de l’organisation du sentier transcanadien, nous pouvions retrouver notre chemin en traversant ces labyrinthes urbains.
Nous avons pris une pause au bord de la Grande Rivière le long d’un court sentier dans le parc Homer Watson. Ce fut un beau moment pour observer martins-pêcheurs, hérons bleus, et même une grande aigrette. Nous avons apprécié le silence de cet espace vert car nous devions compléter un autre dix kilomètres le long d’une route ce jour-là. Nous avons atteint Kitchener, pieds fatigués mais satisfait de notre trajet.
Ce dernier tronçon du Grand Sentier avait bien représenté le paysage animé du sud de l'Ontario ; il fut difficile avec sa surcharge sensorielle urbaine. De Kitchener, nous avions prévu une marche jusqu'à la gare pour se rendre à Guelph où le Grand Sentier redeviendrait davantage rural. Nous avions hâte d'être de retour sur les anciens sentiers ferroviaires, les terres agricoles, et le silence !
