Rivière-du-Loup – Baie-Saint-Paul

After a very rainy day off, we took the 8 am ferry on May 11th. It was a cold morning and we opted to sit inside the lounge for the hour-long sailing. A young man seemed curious about the flags on our Wheelie. We greeted him and he sat with us. A high-school teacher, Elliot, was an avid cyclist and hiker. He spoke of his desire to explore Canada with his dog. His companionship made the ferry ride seem short.

As the ferry approached the north shore, we anticipated the challenges ahead. The park trails were closed due to snow conditions. Our chosen alternative took us along highway 138 and a few other smaller roadways to Beaupré (140 kilometers away and 50 kilometers North of Québec City), where we planned to rejoin the Great Trail.
Elliot recommended the smaller road toward Port-au-Persil. On our way out of town, we were mindful of traffic and managed our cadence to reduce wear and tear on our feet and legs. Port-au-Persil was breathtaking, but the roads were long and steep. In the past, when faced with similar challenges, we dug deep, took smaller steps and focused on proper form. Our attention split into two. Our analytical minds supervised our walking techniques making sure we conserved energy by being efficient with each step, and our creative minds wandered in and out of daydreams.

We followed a small stream by the side of the road. It brought back memories for Julie. She played for hours in the stream by the family cottage, making dams and floating branches in the swift current. Later, we spotted some Highland cows. They reminded both of us of our trip to Scotland. In this dreamy state, we floated along almost oblivious of the traffic. Focusing on these reveries, time became elastic.
On our approach to Saint-Fidèle, Simon spotted a sign for the Ecological Centre of Port-au-Saumon. In a flash, a 40-year-old memory came rushing back. He visited his sister Martine who had a summer job as a naturalist at the centre. Aside from the beauty of the area, Simon’s most vivid memory of that visit was the insatiable mosquitoes and his inability to even walk a short trail!

We spent the night in a cozy room in a ‘maison d’hôte’. Our host’s home overlooked the Saint Lawrence River. We fell asleep early with magnificent views from our bed. Next morning as a special treat, we stopped at a local café and enjoyed espressos. The patrons asked what we were doing and suggested various routes and trails.
We arrived at Cap-à-l’Aigle and veered off the main road to enjoy a quieter loop. This township had many quaint homes and a welcoming park. We took advantage of this green space and had a snack by the stream. It seems that everyone was proud of their communities on the north shore. Landscaping and gardens were cleared of signs of winter, and folks were out painting their homes and fences. We saw old barns which had flowers painted on their doors or were highlighted with bright colours.
We arrived in La Malbaie around 4 pm and looked for a motel for the night. The sun and hills took their toll on us. We looked forward to laying down and resting our sore feet.

Pain has often been a companion on these treks; it comes and goes. We have tried to heed its warnings by walking shorter distances on difficult sections and taking rests when needed. But physical pain hasn’t prevented us from enjoying our journeys. We have gained a better understanding of our limitations. Our happiness comes from accomplishing challenging tasks together.
On May 13th, we left the picturesque town of La Malbaie and headed uphill for over 5 kilometers. As we climbed, the views became more spectacular. We took a break at the observatory at the top of the hill. The walk to our next destination of Saint-Irénée was another hilly grind. The descent into town was long and the grades ranged from 12% to 18%.

Our bodies adjusted well to the demands of the hilly terrain. We were both gaining ‘trail shape’, the physical phase of this walk was passing. The next phase in distance walking was described to us by a pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago years ago, called the mental clearing phase. When Julie reached this phase on other treks, she faced many old demons.  Emotions came to the surface as did old doubts and hurt feelings. Both Simon and Julie looked forward to what might come up this time.
We arrived in Les Éboulements by 11 am. It was early and the only auberge was closed for the season.  We decided to continue walking.  It made for a long and very hilly 28-kilometer day. 
We descended into Baie-Saint-Paul where we would have a rest day. These walking days along the roadways were very pleasant, filled with majestic views of the Saint Lawrence, farmlands and quaint villages. Our legs felt reasonably fresh. We planned to go for a meal, after a bath of course!
A small anecdote; Simon’s parents spent their honeymoon in Baie-Saint-Paul in 1950! 

Baie-Saint-Paul

Après notre journée de repos à Rivière-du-Loup, nous avons pris le traversier à 8 h le 11 mai. Le matin était frais et nous nous sommes assis à l’intérieur pour le trajet d’une heure. Un jeune homme, était intriguer par notre chariot. Nous l’avons invité à partager la traversée avec nous. Un professeur au secondaire, Elliot était cycliste et randonneur. Il rêvait d’explorer le Canada avec son chien. Sa compagnie a semblé raccourcir le trajet.
Arrivant sur la rive nord à Saint-Siméon, nous anticipions les défis (grosses côte) à venir. La neige abondante avait causé la fermeture de tous les entiers de Charlevoix jusqu’à la mi-juin. Notre alternative nous dirigea le long de l’autoroute 138 et quelques autres routes secondaires jusqu’à Beaupré (une distance de 140 kilomètres et 50 kilomètres au nord de la ville de Québec), où nous rejoindrions le Grand Sentier.
Elliot avait recommandé une petite route traversant Port-au-Persil. En quittant la ville, nous étions conscients de la circulation routière et nous avons géré nos mouvements pour réduire les blessures aux jambes et pieds. Port-au-Persil était à couper le souffle mais les routes étaient longues et apiques. Antérieurement, face à ses défis, nous avions appris à nous concentrer ; réduisant la longueur de nos enjamber et gardant une bonne forme. L’esprit se divisa ainsi en deux. Le coté analytique supervisait la technique de marche en conservant notre énergie et le coté créatif flottait dans des rêveries.

En suivant un petit ruisseau le long de la route, Julie se rappelait de jouer pendant des heures dans le ruisseau près de son chalet. Elle bâtissait des barrages et suivait les branches qu’elle jetait dans le courant vif. Plus tard, nous avons aperçu des vaches highland. Elles nous ont rappelé notre voyage en Écosse. Dans cet état de rêveries, nous étions inconscients du trafic tout en marchant le long du chemin. Le temps devint élastique.
Avant d’atteindre Saint-Fidèle, Simon a repéré un panneau pour le Centre Écologique de Port-au-Saumon. Instantanément, il se rappela la visite qu’il avait fait il y a 40 ans avec sa sœur Martine. Elle était naturaliste là pendant une saison. Mis à part la beauté de la région, son souvenir le plus vif était certainement les maudits moustiques !
Nous avons passé la nuit dans une maison d’hôte. Cette maison avait une vue formidable du Saint-Laurent. Nous nous sommes endormis tôt avec cette vue magnifique de notre lit. Le lendemain matin nous nous sommes arrêtés dans un café local et nous avons apprécié deux espressos. Les gens du coin nous questionnaient. Vous marchez ? Que faites-vous ? Tous très gentils ils nous ont suggéré quelques variantes pour la journée.

En arrivant au Cap-à-l’Aigle, nous avons quittés la route principale pour profiter d’un petit chemin calme. Sur la rive nord les maisons étaient pittoresques et les parcs accueillants. Nous avons profité d’un espace vert pour prendre une collation près d’un ruisseau. En général, dans la région, les gens semblaient fiers de leurs communautés. Les jardins avaient tous été dégagés après l’hivers, les gens peinturaient leurs maisons et clôtures. Plusieurs vieilles granges étaient peintes de fleurs ou étaient accentuées de couleurs vives.
Nous sommes arrivés à La Malbaie autour de 16 h et nous avons cherché un motel pour la nuit. Le soleil, le vent, et les collines avaient eu leurs effets sur nous. Nous avions hâte de se reposer.
La douleur a souvent été une compagne sur ces treks ; elle va et vient. Nous avons essayé d’écouter ses avertissements. Nous marchions des distances plus courtes lors des sections difficiles et prenions des pauses aux besoin. Mais la douleur physique ne nous a pas empêché de profiter de nos randonnées. Nous avons acquis une meilleure compréhension de nos limites, et compris que notre bonheur vient de l’accomplissement de tâches ardues fait ensemble.

Le 13 mai, nous avons quitté la belle ville de La Malbaie. La route sortant de la ville montait apique pour plus de 5 kilomètres. Au sommet était un observatoire où nous nous sommes arrêtés pour une pause. La marche jusqu’à notre prochaine destination de Sainte-Irénée était une autre route vallonnée. La descente au village fut longue et moyennant entre 12% à 18% degrés.
Nos corps s’ajustaient bien aux exigences du terrain accidenté. La phase physique de cette grande marche se terminait. Il y a plusieurs années une pèlerine sur la Compostelle de Santiago nous avait décrit la deuxième phase ; appelé la phase cérébrale. Quand Julie atteignit cette phase pendant les treks précédents, elle affronta ses vieux démons.  Des émotions parfois déplaisantes faisaient surface. Ce processus semble difficile mais Simon et Julie envisageaient avec aisance cette phase.
Le 14 mai, nous arrivions dans le village Les Éboulements vers 11 h 30, nous avons décidés de continuer jusqu’à Baie-Saint-Paul. Une longue journée de 28 kilomètres, la route fut très montueuse. Nous sommes finalement arrivés à Baie-Saint-Paul tard en après-midi.
Nous avions prévu une journée de repos. Les journées de marche le long de la route avaient été très agréables, remplies de vues grandiose du Fleuve Saint-Laurent. Les fermes et les villages étaient pittoresques et juger des plus beaux au Québec. Nos jambes se sentaient raisonnablement fraîches. Nous sommes sortis pour un bon repas… Après un bain chaud bien sûr !
Une petite anecdote en passant ; les parents de Simon avaient fait leur voyage de noce à Baie-Saint-Paul en 1950 !
