Tweed - Peterborough

Sitting in a coffee shop in Tweed, people looked at us inquisitively. This had become Julie’s cue: engage and start a conversation. Three minutes later local folks from the three neighbouring tables were gathered and asking about our journey on the Great Trail. They also offered insights on Tweed and its history. Tweed was two hundred years old and had been renamed from Hungerford Mills to Tweed for the river, Tweed, in Scotland.
None of our new friends knew that the Great Trail crossed their community. They knew it by its local name, the Hastings County Trail, a very popular snowmobile and ATV trail. Our journey fascinated them and during a lengthy conversation they stated; “it must be such a great way to discover Canada”. That it was! We felt privileged for the opportunity to cross our country on foot. These encounters reinvigorated our passion for our journey.
Prior to returning to the trail, Martine, Simon’s sister, sent Ambroise’s blog. Ambroise and his brother, Hubert, had crossed Baffin Island (Auyuittuq National Park) on skis this past spring. Their blog described the large glacial and mountainous expanses, the frigid temperatures and the surreal experience the two lived on their journey. These young men, our nephews, reminded us of our own adrenaline filed adventures. These types of expeditions filled us with a sense of aliveness, of living on the edge. Our present journey was very different. Its bliss came from slowing down, from divesting ourselves of all pretence. Walking, we felt a deep sense of belonging and peace.

We left Tweed on a quiet Sunday morning; no one was there to witness our departure. Slowly the trail led away from the community toward the countryside. We were free; alone. Stripped of the trappings of city life, we experienced our surroundings in a sensorial way. The smells of the moist earth or nearby farmlands, the sounds of crickets and birds, the play of light through the trees, the bright colour of a flower along the path, and the cooling feeling of the breeze on our hot faces, all of this was paradise.
Life was simple.  Ahead lay another tunnel of trees. We encountered these tunnels several times a day throughout all the provinces we’d crossed since leaving St John’s Newfoundland last spring. Shadowy dappled light even during a sunny afternoon, still air, muffled distant sounds were the totality of the experience of walking through these passageways. They were the blackholes of the trail where we turned inward and travelled in our thoughts. Coming out on the other side, we often commented on the surreal experience it had provided, and sometimes about the mosquitos.  
The trail from Tweed led to Peterborough, approximately one hundred and thirty kilometres. We passed a few small communities along the way. Campbellford and Hastings were noteworthy with historical significance. They had experienced booms in the late 19th century from logging and mining. They were linked by a Canadian National Railway line connecting Kingston and Peterborough. This common theme seemed our refrain along the Great Trail. The railbed was the ribbon that connected history and communities through time and space. We saw ourselves moving along its colourful track where time became fluid. We thought of the two men who, in 1906, crossed Canada on the same railbeds. Would they have stopped here to enjoy the view? Where did they sleep? Did they feel the same exhilaration and the same bone aching fatigue we did? (Referring to the book “Transcontinental Pedestrians: The First Walk Across Canada From Sea to Sea”)

The trail condition had not been ideal since Kaladar. The work on the trail and the ATVs caused the track to be loose and rutted for over one hundred kilometers. It was pleasant to have others on the trail, but at what cost? Through some sections, it was analogous to walking on a graveled beach. The fist size rocks, and loose gravel tugged at the Wheelie causing constant drag. Our effort each day left us spent. Surprisingly, we were still achieving twenty-eight to thirty-two kilometers per day. We retired early at night and woke-up each morning energised and ready to walk again.
The landscape remained, for the most part buggy and swampy. Nature was a splendor in both the small and large scales. We marveled at the vistas and sunsets, and at the small creatures such as the occasional baby snapping turtles crossing the trail or the monarch caterpillar feeding on milkweed.  Julie had been taught by her father, Pierre, to study nature and learn the names of plants, insects, and animals. This enriched our travels.

We looked forward to Peterborough and a rest day. Julie’s back was acting up and causing her pain. Approaching town, we walked quietly. Julie was focused on minimising pain and Simon was meditating on the topics of human rights and healthcare. Deep thoughts, too deep for our simple blog.
We got into Peterborough, visited a physio for Julie’s back and booked a room for a few days. The hotel had a hot tub and that’s where Julie spent a good deal of time! From here the Great Trail wound its way toward Oshawa through Lindsay and Uxbridge. The nights were getting cooler and we hoped for fewer mosquitoes. September would start showing its autumnal colours.

Assis dans un café à Tweed, les gens nous regardaient curieusement. Julie n’attendait que ça pour s'engager et partir la conversation. Trois minutes plus tard, les gens des trois tables avoisinantes étaient réunis et posaient des questions sur le Grand Sentier et notre périple. Ils nous avaient également donné un aperçu de Tweed et de son histoire. Tweed avait plus de deux cents ans et avait été rebaptisé ; de Hungerford Mills à Tweed depuis la rivière, Tweed, en Écosse.

Aucun de nos nouveaux amis savaient que le Grand Sentier traversait leur communauté. Ils le connaissaient par son nom local, le ‘Hastings County Trail’, un sentier très populaire pour motoneige et VTT. Notre excursion les fascinait et au cours d'une longue conversation, ils avaient déclaré ; « ce doit être une excellente façon de découvrir le Canada ». Et oui, ce l’était ! Nous nous sentions privilégiés d’avoir l’occasion de traverser notre pays à pied. Ces rencontres fortifiaient notre passion pour notre voyage.
Avant de reprendre la piste, Martine, la sœur de Simon, nous avait envoyé le blogue d'Ambroise. Ambroise et son frère, Hubert, avaient traversé l'île de Baffin (Parc National Auyuittuq) en skis le printemps dernier. Leur blogue décrivait de grands étendu de glaces et montagnes, les températures frigides et l'expérience surréelle qu’ils avaient vécu. Ces jeunes hommes, nos neveux, nous rappelaient nos propres aventures remplies d'adrénaline. Ce style d'expéditions nous enivrait. Pendant nos randonnées à longues distances ce sens d’extase nous arrivait au ralenti. En se débarrassant de tout ce qu’il y avait de superflu, nous retrouvions une grande paix interne et un sens d’appartenance.
Nous avons quitté Tweed un dimanche matin tranquille. Personne ne s’est aperçue de notre départ. Lentement, le sentier s'éloigna de la communauté et graduellement la campagne nous entoura. Nous étions libres et seul. Dépouillés du mouvement de la vie urbaine, l’expérience du sentier et de son environnement devint sensorielle. Les odeurs de la terre humide ou des terres agricoles avoisinantes, le son des grillons et des oiseaux, le jeu de lumière à travers des arbres, la couleur vive d'une fleur le long du chemin, et la sensation fraiche d’une brise sur nos visages surchauffés, Tout ceci était le paradis.
En avant ce trouvait un autre ‘tunnel d'arbres’. Nous rencontrions ces tunnels souvent, plusieurs fois par jour depuis notre départ de St John's Terre-Neuve. Éclairage tamisé même pendant un après-midi ensoleillé, l'air immobile, les sons lointains étouffés, ces tunnels nous transmettaient une expérience assez particulière. Ils étaient les trous-noirs de la piste. Ils nous permettaient de tourner notre attention à notre monde interne en voyageant dans nos pensées. En sortant de l'autre côté, on se décrivait ces expériences surréelles, souvent suivit d’un commentaire sur les moustiques.

Le sentier de Tweed se dirigeait vers Peterborough, approximativement à cent trente kilomètres. Nous passions quelques charmantes communautés le long du sentier. Campbellford et Hastings fut remarquables avec leurs côtés historiques. Elles avaient connu un éclat économique à la fin du 19ème siècle, profitant de l'exploitation forestière et minière. Elles étaient reliées par une courte ligne de chemin de fer (Canadien National) joignant Kingston et Peterborough. Ce thème commun continuait ce même refrain le long du Grand Sentier. Ce lien ferroviaire s’étirait comme un ruban qui reliait l'histoire et les communautés à travers du temps et de l'espace. Nous avons jasé des deux hommes qui, en 1906, avaient traversés le Canada sur les mêmes chemins ferroviaires. Se seraient-ils arrêtés ici pour profiter de ces vues magnifiques ? Où c’étaient-ils endormi ? Avaient-ils ressenti la même exaltation et les mêmes fatigues que nous ? A vrais dire, l'état du sentier n'était pas idéal depuis Kaladar (avant Tweed). Le travail de surface et la présence des VTT avaient abimer le sentier sur plus de cent kilomètres. C’était agréable d’avoir une autre présence sur la piste mais à quel prix ? Sur plusieurs sections, notre mouvement était semblable à la marche sur une plage de gravier. Les grosses roches, et le gravier lâche causaient une tension constante pour notre chariot (Wheelie). Nos efforts chaque jour nous épuisaient. Étonnamment, nous atteignions vingt-huit à trente-deux kilomètres par jour. Nous passions les soirées étendues et après une bonne nuit de sommeil, nous étions énergisés, prêt à marcher.

Le paysage demeurait surtout marécageux et par moment infester de moustiques. La nature était quand même splendide. Nous étions émerveillés des panoramas et couchers de soleil. Mais nous trouvions tout aussi remarquable les petites créatures comme les jeunes tortues serpentines qui traversaient le sentier ou les chenilles monarques qui se nourrissaient d'asclépiades. Grace à son père, Pierre, Julie avait étudier la nature et appris les noms de nombreuses plantes, insectes et animaux. Nos marches en étaient enrichies.
Nous avions hâte de rejoindre Peterborough et prendre une journée de repos. Le dos de Julie avait un spasme et lui causait de la douleur. En approchant la ville, nous marchions en silence. Julie se concentrait sur sa technique de marche pour minimiser la douleur et Simon méditait sur les sujets des droits de l'homme et des soins de santé. Pensées profondes, trop profondes pour notre blogue.
Notre arrivée à Peterborough fut suivie d’une visite chez le physio pour le dos de Julie. Nous avons ensuite réservé une chambre pour quelques jours. L’hôtel avait un bain tourbillons, c'était là que Julie passerait un bon moment ! De Peterborough, le Grand Sentier se dirigeait vers Oshawa en passant par Lindsay et Uxbridge. Les nuits se refroidissaient et nous avions espoirs de voir moins de moustiques. Septembre montrerait ses belles couleurs d’automne.
